Spark 43 was asked to assist Michigan Sports Academies with a synthetic turf replacement project at the Fieldhouse l
In the winter of 2021, we were approached by Michigan Sports Academies to evaluate their existing synthetic turf fields at the Fieldhouse location. Upon determining that the fields had reached the end of their useful life we began the process of helping our client determine next steps for replacement of all four fields. We undertook an extensive research and benchmarking exercise to ensure that the selected product would meet the safety and performance requirements established by MSA. We worked alongside the client to help establish project schedules and negotiate the contract with selected vendor.
At the same time our team was evaluating turf systems, we were also working directly with program directors, coaches and facilities staff from MSA, the Michigan Futbol Academy and Michigan Lax Academy to update the field layouts to meet their current and future needs. The final field designs included soccer fields in a variety of sizes to support multiple age groups, full sized women’s and men’s lacrosse fields and a full-sized American Football field.
Primary fields playing field locations were relocated to accommodate a new Championship Field for tournament play while ensuring that the new design enhances player and spectator safety.
During construction our role shifted to more of an owner’s representative. We coordinated with MSA staff and the demolition and installation contractors to help ensure that at least half of the fields remained open and safe for use during construction. This included a detailed operation, construction staging and installation plan to ensure that athletes and guests remained safe during construction.
The project was in association with AMDG Architects.
